The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama has announced that Nigeria will commence evacuation of Nigerians from South Africa starting Friday, 6th August 2019.
The minister made the news known through the Ministry’s spokesperson, Mr. Ferdinand Nwonye, in a statement released on the evening of Wednesday 4th September in Abuja after a brief meeting with the President.
Nwonye said that that Proprietor of Air Peace Airline has volunteered to send an aircraft from Friday, Sept. 6, to evacuate Nigerians who wish to return on a free of charge basis.
The statement reads below:
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform the general public that following the recent xenophobic attack on foreign nationals, including Nigerians in South Africa, the Proprietor of Air Peace Airlines, has volunteered to send an aircraft to evacuate Nigerians.
“The general public is hereby advised to inform their relatives in South Africa to take advantage of this laudable gesture.
“Interested Nigerians are therefore advised to liaise with the High Commission of Nigeria in Pretoria and the Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg for further necessary arrangement,”
It will be recalled that Nigeria has opted out of the WEF summit planned to take place in South Africa tomorrow 6th, September 2019, following the recent Xenophobic attacks in South Africa. Nigeria has also recalled the high commissioner to South Africa as a measure to express the countries dissatisfaction
