Former UEFA president, Michel Platini have been arrested by the French police following his role on the controversial award of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.
Michel Platini who was elected in 2007 and served as the president of the Federation of International Football Association, FIFA until 2015, after which he was charged for corruption and subsequently banned by the FIFA Ethics Committee was seen taken into the premises of the Anti-Corruption Office of the Judicial Police (OCLCIFF) in France
A French publication, Mediapart claim Platini was taken into custody on Tuesday morning as part of the investigation into how Qatar.emerged as the host of the 2022 world cup
Back in December 2010 Qatar was controversially revealed as the hosts of the 2022 World Cup, following on from Russia in 2018. A number of people have raised issues regarding the decision to select the peninsular Arab country. There have been concerns by human right activists on the decision stating various reasons, one of which is the status of homosexuality in Qatar.
In 2014 Platini admitted holding a secret meeting with the disgraced football official Mohamed Bin Hammam, shortly before casting his vote for Qatar
